Bahama Mission Update

We are eight days from the peak of the Hurricane Season. The news has been filled with reports on Fay, Gustauv, Hanna, and now Ike and soon Josephine. We received a lot of rain from Fay while being missed by Gustauv. Our prayers go out to the victims of both of these storms. Many lives were lost and damage was extensive. At this time, Hanna is in the southern Bahamas and is due to move up the chain as a Cat.2 storm between now and Thursday. The people of the Islands are getting ready for this storm and also Ike that is scheduled to hit the southern Bahamas by Saturday. We will need some help in the way of funds to assist those in the various congregations who will be hardest hit. Checks can be marked for Hurricane Recovery and sent to the Gulf Coast Church at the address below. We will go out with needed supplies and funds as soon as the weather clears. We had the plane in the hanger for a couple of days during Fay and it is due to go back in tomorrow. We have moved back to Florida with the plane as we have no hangers in Abaco. The Collins will move our car and van to higher ground to keep them from flooding out. Dinah and I took a little time for a driving trip. It was a combination report trip and some personal time. Dinah enjoyed the driving and seeing places from eye level. I think she decided that driving on rain soaked highways is more dangerous than flying. I had some long needed extensive dental work done, visited with my 88 year old mother and we got to spend some quality time with our 8 month old grand-daughter whom we had not seen in six months. We visited with supporters in Louisiana who just got hit by Gustauv. We also had a delightful Sunday with the Church in Desdemona, Texas. My history with this congregations goes back 50 years. I preached there while in college. We also met with the leaders of two groups who hope to send people to Long Island next year to help. We have one other group of University students from UT Knoxville with Todd Tarbett who would like to come during Spring Break 2009. We have been slow getting back to them due to the storms. Hopefully we can work a schedule very soon. I do not set programs up with congregations anymore. I let them know that people are available and let them offer the invitations to come and work. We have had some groups down in several congregations this summer. Personal Evangelism has been strong and a number of studies are in progress and several baptisms have taken place. When the storms approach we go into a survival mood and wait for better days. Mike Gurganus has a great blog on Exuma Missions that updates the work with the McQueens. http://www.exumamissions.blogspot.com/. There are pictures and stories you will enjoy. The Park Plaza Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma just sent a very generous contribution to help with Bibles and distribution. We are very thankful to add them to the team. Others of you have been very helpful in sending additional funds to assist with fuel costs. We have become very careful about trips, but must continue to reach out in assisting the various congregations. They can be reached only by air. As soon as possible, we will get back with damage reports. Please keep us in your prayers. |
