Bahama Mission Update
March 29, 2003

Dinah and I have been on the road without stop for more than six weeks. Some great things are happening in the Bahamas on several Islands. We have also been away for some of this time. Dinah was able to spend a few days in St. Louis when Tom, her youngest brother under went the replacement of a section of his aorta. He had some complications with blood clots, but is now doing very well.Tom is a young 45. He is back working an hour or so every day, and making great progress. We also flew back to Texas after the death of my father. We are so thankful to all of you for your calls, flowers, memorials, cards, e-mails and personal concern during both of these events. This is a part of an article requested by some papers concerning Dad.

Guy V. Caskey
December 3, 1917 – March 12, 2003

An overflow crowd attended the funeral for Guy V. Caskey Saturday morning March 15, 2003. The brief but meaningful service was conducted by his son, son-in-law, foster son, and three grandsons. Additionally, these two Tributes were read:

Eldred Echols was his room-mate in college, and a life long friend, author, and veteran missionary:

“When God’s Mighty winds of change swept over the world during the 1st six decades of the 20th century, they bore on their edge God’s gift of eloquence to Guy Caskey which yielded the gold of the gospel to men’s hearts from South to East Africa and back to he Americas and the isles of the sea. Guy not only preached the Word, he became Mr. Mission through his published sermons and lessons. As long as men speak of missions around the world, Guy Caskey’s name will never be far from their lips.”

From Jamaica:

The Church in Jamaica grieves the passing of Guy Caskey. He was truly one of the most outstanding Preachers of the last 100 years in the church of Christ. We are pleased that we made him realize our gratitude and how much we thought of him before he died. The Student Center at the Jamaica School of Preaching was dedicated to and named after Guy and Jessie Lee Caskey.”

Dinah and I spent two weeks in Abaco, Eleuthera and Cat Island before making these trips. I was back in the Islands for almost two weeks while she was in St. Louis. The Frank Sarvers have gone home after their eleventh year in Abaco. This ten week period of teaching, studies and encouragement is something that the brethren in Abaco look forward to all year long. We only wish we had more retired families like Frank and Bea. It is impossible to measure the good they do, and the influence they have on both the Church and the community. They live without complaint in very Spartan accommodations, work tirelessly, and accomplish much. Some of the men in Nassau asked if they might be obtained for Cat Island next year?

Jason and Katrinka Quashie are getting settled in Marsh Harbour. She was blessed to get a transfer with her job from Freeport and is back at work with little break. They have already gotten the youth program going well. I think they told me that they are having more than 20 in the special meetings. They have also set up several new Bible Classes on Sunday, and are involved daily in teaching studies. They are well received by the community and we look forward to working more closely with this dedicated couple. Jason flew with me to Eleuthera to visit Lincoln last week. The little congregation in Abaco helps support Lincoln. Jason already has a number of summer programs on the schedule, and we are looking at ideas for adding of some needed classrooms. There have been several baptisms already in the past few weeks with the efforts of both Jason and the Sarvers.

Lincoln has done a great job in getting the building in Rock Sound finished on the outside. It is now the star attraction in the downtown area. It sports the new 8 foot sign that Dinah painted, and is beautiful in the Montgomery white with Turquoise trim. Someone broke into his place and stole the clothes and shoes of his nephew who cares for him. It took time, but we were able to replace some of the things, and Taurel is a happy camper again. Lincoln and I are scheduled to be together in Ft. Myers, Florida in May for a men's retreat. Several Summer programs are scheduled, and we are now about ready to kick off the Friday evening Bible Film program in the building. Lincoln also has his drug education program going.

Four men from Nassau ("Untold Stories" is a prayer and encouragement group in Nassau) started the drive to rejuvenate the congregation in Cat Island. Most of the members have moved to get jobs elsewhere, or have died. Brother Deveaux will turn 83 July 1. The men spent a long week-end in Smith's Bay. They knocked doors, conducted studies, had devotionals. encouraged the few local members, and plan to return once a month. They reported 11 on Sunday morning and 14 on Sunday night. They are seeking someone to move to Cat Island and work with the Church alongside brother Deveaux. We are hoping for a school teacher, or someone working for government. We are so thankful to see the efforts of dedicated Bahamian Christians as they reach out to expand the efforts struggling in the small family Islands. Dinah and I had a great visit with the Deveaux family when we went down between our trips. The brethren in Freeport are now spear-heading he efforts with the small congregation in San Salvador.

I had some work to do on the plane, and was a little stressed trying to get it done with everything else going on. I was working just after daylight the other morning. I had only had a quick cup of coffee. Sister Brown set up a delightful breakfast for me. I hungrily ate the delicious dish and then asked what it was? She had prepared a Bahamian favorite; Soused sheep's tongue with cassava. We enjoy such a great relationship with these wonderful people.

We are traveling again, and will be visiting with several of our supporting congregations in the next few days. Keep us in your prayers!

Thank you again for all of your care and support. We labor together and God gives the increase.
