Bahama Mission
March and April 2002
Regular Update Reports have been sent over the past few weeks to those of you who receive the Updates on e-mail. Since we have been sending those on an average of twice a month, we have cut expenses by not sending out the mailed regular reports as often. We continue to appreciate all of you and the help you give to make the work among the people of the Bahamas a reality.
We have really been busy with all of the plans for this summer, and the trip that Dinah and I made back to Texas to visit with many of you. Our schedule has been very full since our return, and this of course was complicated by the damage done to the wing of the plane when we landed back in Palm Beach, Florida to return the Tarver’s to catch their plane back to Houston. After landing we were blown off the runway by some kind of a wind, and expect the new exchange wing to be shipped today. The damage to the wing occurred when we hit a sign on the edge of the runway. Thankfully no one was hurt.
We have been blessed with groups arriving to help in many areas. Two groups have been working with the Church in Freeport. One of them had 56 men and women who did a lot of door knocking and also conducted a VBS. The Church in Freeport is 95% done with the large addition to the back of their building. We are so thankful for the growth there, and the deep commitment to reaching out to the other Islands of the Bahamas.
Abaco has been doing well in the absence of a regular minister. Men have been flying over each week-end to preach. Leonard Edgecombe has done a great job in keeping things going. Drexal Major is still in Nassau, and his family is moving to be with him as soon as school is out. Our prayers continue with him during the very difficult adjustments he is making. The community of Marsh Harbour conducted a fund raiser for him last Saturday. They were hoping to raise as much as $15,000 to aid in supporting his family. Several congregations and individuals have also contributed to his hospital bills and support. We are most thankful.
Cleo and Judy Tarver joined Dinah and me in finishing phase one of the work on the building in Rock Sound. Lincoln Young is well into phase two. One Friday of this week, a group will arrive from Wynn, Arkansas to spend a week with him in a VBS and some meetings. Then the first part of July another group will come from Memphis, and the third group will arrive the first part of August. Lincoln just returned from holding a meeting in Nassau and also attending the funeral of his Grandmother.
The group will be leaving Exuma this week after 10 days of laying ground work for the establishment of a new congregation. Mike Gurganus is a very talented and hard working man, and has done a great job of meeting people, teaching in the schools, and letting the people of the area know about the Church. As soon as the plane is ready, we will be delivering Bibles to the area along with teaching materials. Franklin Simmons from Nassau was to be with them this week as were Dinah and I. We were not able to fly down because of the plane and Franklin had a heart attack. He is doing well. We do not always do what we plan as situations dictate changes.
We continue to appreciate your support and prayer. We are striving to replace some support recently lost due to the downsizing of several of our supporting congregations. Please keep us in your prayers.
